Best Packing Tips for a Successful Move

Packing can be a chore, especially if you have never moved house before. We wanted to share some of our best packing practices and hacks, as well as packing disasters to avoid.

HOW TO CHOOSE BOXES

The boxes you use for moving house can make or break the experience. Make sure your boxes are structurally sound and not over packed. It is also useful to have boxes of different sizes for different things. Small boxes can be helpful for small bits, collectables, or delicate items while large boxes are best for things like clothing, blankets, and pillows to avoid overpacking.

LABEL BOXES BY ROOM

Label everything. Every single box. You will thank us later when you are able to find the right boxes in a stressful moment. Be sure to label the boxes not just on the top or bottom, but especially on the sides as you won’t be able to see the top or bottom once boxes are stacked. It is also useful to write down a few items that you might want to look for first once you move to make it easier to find.

TAPE BOTH SIDES OF THE BOX

Tape both sides of the box, not just the bottom. This will help with keeping the boxes integrity during the move and secure the items from falling through. It would be a disaster if the boxes were just folded, picked up, and everything collapses through the bottom.

DONATE UNWANTED ITEMS

If you haven’t moved house in a while you might have a lot of things to sort through and probably some of them are unwanted. Contact local charity shops or non-profits to inquire about their donation schemes.

GET STORAGE FOR SAVING SPACE

Downsizing your home but you don’t want to downsize your possessions? BlueSky has affordable storage solutions for you. For complicated moves that force you out of one property before moving into the next or simply a need to save space, contact us for a free quote today.

WRAP FRAGILES IN PAPER OR CLOTHING

Wrap your breakables in newspaper or clothing. Scarfs, socks, rags, and other materials can help fill the space between glasses, collectables, and more to ensure safe transport. Glasses can be wrapped in newspaper and you can leave a page or two between plates to avoid scratches.

LAUNDRY BASKETS FOR MOVING PLANTS

This is a very underrated but incredible moving hack. Use your laundry baskets to transport your plants from your old to your new home. This mainly works with short wide baskets with handles on the side so awkward plants can be moved with ease without taking up boxes.

NEXT DAY DELIVERY FOR MOVING BOXES

There is nothing worse than running out of boxes days before your big move. With our online packaging supply shop, we got you covered. Next day delivery for cardboard boxes and packaging supplies.

USE A BIN BAG TO PROTECT CLOTHING

No need to fold and pack away your clothes hanging in the wardrobe. Simply grab a handful of hangers and cover them with a bin bag. For added protection use rubber bands to hold the hangers together so they don’t fall through into the bag.

KEEP DISASSEMBLED FURNITURE PIECES TOGETHER

If you need to disassemble any furniture that has loose screws or pieces then place them together in a small bag and tape the bag to the item of furniture. This will ensure that they stay together and lets the movers know to be careful.

SEND CHILDREN OUT TO PLAY

Moving is incredibly stressful and it doesn’t improve with children (or pets) running around or moaning about the long day. Many people suggest sending the kids to a family member or friend’s house for the day to keep them out of the way of the chaos. Alternatively, pets can be sent to daycare or kennel for the day so you won’t chance an escape.

MEASURE LARGE FURNITURE AND DOORWAYS

Trust us. Measure your large sofa before you plan on moving, and then measure your door frame in your new home. You would be shocked at how many people get a new sofa into their home, quickly forget the pain and process of getting it in, only to be reminded when attempting to move it out. Avoid disappointment and added stress by having large bulk items prepared in advance.

CREATE AN OPEN FIRST BOX

This is one of the best tips on the list. Set one box with all of the most important things that you might need on the day of and few days after you move. This will include things like important documents, toilet paper, scissors, toiletries, pyjamas, or even cleaning supplies. Label this box accordingly and take it with you on moving day to set aside for when needed.
